The trend is reversed for Neymar at PSG, and his future is really in question since the Emir of Qatar does not appreciate the behavior and performance of the Brazilian star.
Money has never been a problem for Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, whose personal fortune is estimated at 2.5 billion euros. This is why by buying PSG, he often indulged himself without looking at the expense, like the almost unthinkable moment in 2017 when he lifted Neymar’s release clause for 222 million euros, a sum bet by FC Barcelona to keep away all imaginable candidates. A war prize that changed the dimension of world football, but did not necessarily help PSG to finally achieve its goal of winning the Champions League.
Salary and sponsors from Qatar
Five years after the events, the Emir of Qatar believes he was tricked by Neymar, says L’Equipe, and believes that the Brazilian does not at all justify the investment made in him. It must be said that, in addition to the amount of the transfer, his salary is not insignificant, with almost 40 million euros per year, or 60 million euros to pay for PSG with the charges. Since his signature, Neymar has therefore cost more than half a billion euros, and it is obviously not over since the Parisian number 10 still has four years of contract, even if his salary will be slightly decreasing. On top of that, the Brazilian was able to sign copious personal contracts with Qatari companies, which he never would have had at such amounts if he hadn’t joined PSG. Qatar Airways and Qatar National Bank continue to pay Neymar handsomely, without necessarily a huge return in terms of image, trophies or prestige.

But this past season, with Neymar out of form due to a late return from another injury in the showpiece game against Real Madrid, was the last straw for Qatar. In Doha, it is believed that Neymar is no longer so interested in football, and that his recurring injuries are not really linked to bad luck, but rather to a questionable lifestyle. In recent months, the Emir’s entourage has called Neymar to order, asking him to be a little more vigilant about his lifestyle, and more focused on his performance with PSG. The Brazilian took good note of it and would have corrected the situation, even if nobody veils the face. Neymar is unsaleable with his concrete contract and the prospect of the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year. Until then, the summer will probably be quiet, even if the Emir of Qatar now considers that the former Barcelona player is no longer really the jewel that makes Paris dream bigger.
