news culture MCU: An essential actor in the Avengers rewrites his own dialogues
If you are told: Star Wars, Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, Unbreakable, Out of reach, Marvel Cinematic Universe, do you answer? Normally, you should come across Samuel L. Jackson, whose career began in the 70s and continues today with the MCU.
Samuel L Jackson knows Nick Fury very well, and he proves it to the writers
For 14 years now, Samuel L Jackson is, among other things, the Nick Fury of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A central character in the plot since he is the head of SHIELD and the origin of the Avengers initiative. Recently, the actor spoke with the site Collider, referring in particular to his careerhis tastes, but also how work is done in the MCU from Marvel and Disney.
I’ve played Nick Fury for so long that I know how he is, how he thinks, and how he feels. I know the writers are at home writing about the character. If they’re the superhero type, they know how to do it. I worked with directors who had written comic-books (…) And then, there are the directors who will say to me “Say it as Nick Fury would say it”, which amounts to saying “Say- like Jules in Pulp Fiction, like Ordell in Jackie Brown, or like any of those smartass characters you’ve played before.” (…)
In this context, he broaches the subject of his dialogues, considering himself perfectly satisfied with the work of the authors on the character of Nick Fury. But sometimes, and especially thanks to his experience, he doesn’t like them. So rather than asking for changes to the production and the scriptwriters, he takes care of it himselfthis does not seem to pose any problem, especially since these rewrites are obviously not very numerous:
There are also moments (…) during which I say to myself “The screenwriter knows what he wants to tell, but he hasn’t managed to do it, so I’m going to help him”, and that’s so I write the dialogues. The next day, I arrive, I take the person in question aside and I say to him “Look, I know you wrote that, but Nick Fury can say it in a better way”. And they’re like, ‘Oh, my God. You’re right, and that’s okay, you’re Nick Fury!
Character identification: a major issue in the MCU
Of course, you need a lot of experience in the field to be able to do this kind of thing, and even then, it’s not always possible. But the interesting point is above all the fact that when an actor or actress embodies a character long enoughthe public identifies this artist as being THIS character, but the actors, too, identify with each other and know the character by heart of a person who does not yet exist.
Today, for example, it is very hard to imagine Iron Man without the face of Robert Downey Jr don’t come to mind, it’s almost impossible to see Daniel Radcliffe without thinking about Harry Potter despite his many other roles, or Hannibal Lecter without thinking of Anthony Hopkins. After 14 years as Nick Fury, Samul L Jackson seems to know the character perfectly, and the production obviously trusts him to make changes in the script of films in which hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake.
