New York: the thinnest skyscraper in the world has just been inaugurated

Officially completed, the Steinway Tower at 111 West 57th Street in Manhattan is now ready to welcome its first residents. With only 18 meters in width, this luxurious 84-storey building reaches 435 meters in height, making it the tallest in the world.

Designed by New York architecture firm SHoP Architects, this skyscraper was built by JDS Development, Property Markets Group and Spruce Capital Partners. Started in 2013, the construction of this skyscraper with its extraordinary and daring architecture has just come to an end.

The Steinway Tower is actually an addition to Steinway Hall, a historic building dating back to 1925, which combined the former home of piano maker Steinway and Sons and a concert hall.

To design it, its architects told CNN, they drew inspiration from Manhattan’s golden age of skyscrapers and New York’s Art Deco history.

Adorned with terracotta blocks and bronze, the facade of the tower seems to change color and texture depending on the time of day, the weather conditions and the angle from which it is viewed.

an impressive finesse that comes at a high price

Also known as the Pencil Towers, these ultra-thin skyscrapers that shaped the Hong Kong skyline in the 1970s have become a real trend in the New York district of Manhattan over the last ten years. .

The architecture of the Steinway Tower has an aspect ratio of 24:1 i.e. it is 24 times taller than it is wide, making it the thinnest of all existing skyscrapers.

With a height of 435 meters, this building is the third tallest skyscraper in New York, behind the One World Trade Center (541 meters) and the Central Park Tower (472 meters). Globally, the Steinway Tower ranks 28th.

The price of these properties is commensurate with the location and the services provided by this very chic New York pied-à-terre. The price range is between 7.75 million dollars (7.12 million euros) for the purchase of the least expensive apartment with an area of ​​240 m2 all the same, and 66 million dollars (i.e. 60 million euros) for the acquisition of the penthouse with an area of ​​approximately 662 m2 spread over three floors.
