We know the title of “Car of the Year”, designated at European level, won this year by the Kia EV6. And there is a higher level, the “World Car Awards”, which therefore distinguish cars on a global level.
To qualify, the cars must be sold in at least two major markets around the world. The jury is made up of journalists from the four corners of the globe… with however a not very fair distribution, since there are 22 Americans, against 1 Frenchman. Suffice to say that our French cars already have no chance.
But the distinguished models are still known to us. Thus, after the Volkswagen ID.4, it is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 which won the supreme title for 2022. So another electric one! It could not be otherwise: the first electric car from Hyundai designed on a basis dedicated to this type of engine was in the final with the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Kia EV6. The jury therefore did not play the card of conservatism, while on a global scale, the electric car still represents a small share of sales.
Unsurprisingly, the Hyundai also won the prize in the category dedicated to electrics, against the Audi e-tron GT and Mercedes EQS, but also the design prize. The latter did not leave empty-handed: Mercedes took the “World Luxuxy Car” trophy, therefore the high-end car of the year, Audi took the “Word Performance Car” trophy, the sports car of the year. The prize list is completed by the urban car of the year: the Toyota Yaris Cross (which faced the Opel Mokka and the Volkswagen Taigun, cousin of the T-Cross).
