Mohamed Ihattaren has come a long way. Ex-great hope of Dutch youth and quickly under the wings of Mino Raiola, the 20-year-old attacking midfielder had everything to succeed. Only, the rest of his career took a very different turn after revealing himself at PSV Eindhoven. Marked by the death of his father in the fall of 2019, which affected him terribly, his transfer to Juventus, then his loan to Sampdoria, then turned into a fiasco. To the point that the native of Utrecht gives no more news and becomes reported missing … without ever returning to Sampdoria.
Logically mentally fragile because of his personal problems, Mohamed Ihattaren came out of silence last January by recounting his ordeal in the Dutch press. “I left Samp because of the circumstances that prevailed there. At 19, I was sitting in a hotel room, alone, on my own. The coach didn’t even know I was left-handed. They never paid my salary, not even health insurance. What if I broke my leg?he explained to Telegraaf.
Ajax Amsterdam believed in him
“They told me they pay salaries every two months but that was wrong, they didn’t honor any agreement. Nobody spoke to me apart from the team manager, I saw people in costume, I didn’t know who it was. It could have been leaders like taxi drivers”, he added. But in the end, the one who thought about quitting football for good seems to have questioned himself and finally reached an agreement with Ajax Amsterdam, where he is on loan from Juventus until December 31, 2022.
Mo Ihattaren is only 19 years old and is considered one of our country’s greatest talents. However, due to some circumstances, he hasn’t played a match for a long time. With us, he will continue to work on his physical condition with the youngsters of Ajaxexplained Marc Overmars, the former sports director of Ajax. There he will then be able to show that he is still the good player that we know. I am very attentive. We offer him this opportunity and we will help him, but of course it starts with himself and he knows it.
Mo Ihattaren, a comeback that is taking shape
And after months and months without playing and only one appearance in the professional group of Sampdoria, it was finally during this month of April that Ihattaren was able to put on his crampons again, after coming into play in the 62nd minute against NAC Breda (0-0), with young Ajax playing in the Dutch second division. “He is back on the field. You have to make concessions with yourself and stick to them. This is called discipline. It’s great that he was able to take this step.”explained his coach after the meeting.
John Heitinga also decided to start him directly the following day, against TOP Oss. With a goal and an assist, Ihattaren largely contributed to the victory of the reserve team (4-1). “It was not just me who allowed this, but everyone in the team. We all hope that he will take his responsibilities and take the next step. That’s why I keep saying ‘give it time’released Heitinga in front of the camera ofESPN.
If he continues like this, Mohamed Ihattaren could therefore grab a few minutes with the first team, by the end of the season. While Erik ten Hag expects even more from him for the moment, Ihattaren finally seems to flourish and evolve in a framework allowing him to perform serenely. “You can achieve anything with the right people around you”, he explained on Instagram after his good performance. Perhaps the beginning of his football resurrection…
