Tunisia receives beautiful people this Monday, April 11. Indeed, a delegation of European parliamentarians is currently on its way to Tunis. These MEPs, who belong to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, will stay with us until 14 April 2022. Three days will not be too long to get a clear idea of the structural and economic problems of the young democracy, but above all to read in the game of the head of state, Kais Saied. MEPs will also speak with civil society and political parties, just to gather all the bells and whistles. Needless to say that the opposition has already prepared its weapons to darken as much as possible the actions of the occupant of the palace of Carthage…

There is no doubt about it, this trip is an additional pressure on the shoulders of the President of the Republic. He and the government of Najla Bouden will have to explain themselves on their roadmap, on the noises around the bullying against opponents, former deputies, journalists, etc. European parliamentarians do not go down to Tunis with a blank page, they have certainly heard of the turmoil in Tunis around the dissolution of Parliament and the passage of certain agitators before the military courts. These are practices that are not common in Europe and therefore necessarily offend them, but they also know that they are dealing with a democracy in the making which is barely 10 years old and still on paper…

The whole point of this trip is this: Trying to understand and accept to a certain extent the imperfections of a young democracy, which has no common measure with the European regimes, some of which are based on decades of democratic experience. Obviously the ex-president of the now dissolved Parliament, Rached Ghannouchi and all his clique, if indeed the MEPs give them the opportunity, will do everything to ensure that the parliamentarians are the least indulgent possible with Kais Saied…

For the opposition, France’s communiqué following the official dissolution of Parliament looked like a real disappointment, given that the firm condemnation it had been waiting for did not come. The press release from the European Union (EU) signed by the head of diplomacy, Josep Borrell, uses almost the same terms as that of France. So again there is no condemnation of the fatal blow to Parliament, it is a second cold shower for Saied’s opponents. And even better – or worse, it depends: there is even a small certificate of satisfaction for “progress in developing an economic reform agenda”. Well, seen from here we find it difficult to follow the Europeans because the reform program remains a complete headache for the executive, but the main thing for Saied is that the EU gives him a favorable bias on his ability to reform the country…

There remains another requirement of the EU, which will no doubt be recalled by MEPs visiting Tunis: “a global dialogue involving all political parties” and national organizations. For the moment we are not taking the path, on the contrary. So how are the European parliamentarians going to succeed there, everything and everyone have failed so far? We are curious to know…

But what must be remembered is that the European partner had confiscated aid of 300 million euros on the grounds that the trajectory taken by the Tunisian head of state is very problematic. Part of the assurances expected by the Council of the EU and the European Commission depend on the trip of MEPs. At the moment the Council of the EU is chaired by a “friend” of Tunisia, the French head of state, Emmanuel Macron; Tunis has an interest in taking the opportunity to snatch everything that can be because Macron’s mandate at the head of the EU ends in June, if he manages to get rid of Marine Le Pen in the second round of the presidential election. this April 24th…
